| A Buffalowind is a very cold, very strong wind out of the North that makes it nearly impossible to be outside. I cannot count the times that such a wind has come through in Texas and I have seen the buffalo running and jumping and snorting in joy over the impending cold weather. This behavior shows very clearly that buffalo are uniquely suited to dealing with the wide climate extremes of the Great Plains. It also shows their reaction in the face of challenges which can demoralize non-native species. This picture is of General, the dominant bull over the thirty other herd bulls in our herd, during a very cold morning. Note the frost on his flanks showing the insulating qualities of his fur. General, like all male buffalo, will shed most of his hair by June and will be practically naked in order to handle the heat of the summer. |
